Last week I gave you all a sneak peek of an adventure we went on over the Bank Holiday weekend. It was something The Boy & Girl had never done before and to be honest I really do think it is only this Summer that they could have been trusted to stay behind the safety fence without me constantly having to watch them and tell them to get back. I really don't find those type of family days much fun and am so glad that they are getting older and I only have to tell them once that they need to do this, do that or not do something in order to be safe. It really does make days out much more fun and far, far less stressful for me. I am certainly at the point where I need less stress but aren't we all!
Anyway, Bank Holiday weekend saw us as a family go on a new adventure. A little walk down to the new bridge over the estuary and then on for another 5 minutes until we joined a rather lovely, friendly and very welcoming group of people to sit in the sunshine and watch some motorcycle road racing.
We arrived in time to see the second half of the warm up laps.
The side car racing where the passenger 'jumped' over the side of the bike was the most thrilling thing to watch for The Boy & Girl.
After just over an hour the practice laps were over and an hour break was had before the actual races began. During this time we decided to eat our picnic which we had brought with us. It seems such a long time since we had a picnic and although it was quite simple it really was thoroughly enjoyed.
Then the races began. In total there were 24 races held that afternoon. Each race was 3/4 laps of the track, a track long enough and detailed enough to add some excitement to each race. but short enough that people lapped each other and the kids did not get bored waiting an eternity for the bikes to come back in front of where we were sitting.
The Girl was fascinated that girl's raced too and took great interest in races where they did. It was also great to see one Lady in the top 3 of her category showing us Ladies can do anything we set our minds to.
There were ups and downs, riders who were expected to win didn't and under dogs showed anyone can achieve what they dream. Sadly there were a number of crashes and one poor fellow on the side car race leant that far over on one of the bends he fell straight off. My heart bled for his Mother who saw the rider some off the track without her Son and the mere 15 minute wait for the ambulance to bring him off the track and back to her must have been agonising. Luckily he was not seriously hurt, just a very bruised pride. However, I would not liked to have been him the morning after when I'm quite sure a lot of body parts would have ached.
It also showed The Boy and Girl that although this seems like so much fun, it is dangerous and these people have many years of experience.
It was a lovely fun day out and so sunny and warm to boot. Due to lack of shade we did not stay to the end and left after race 20 to start our journey home.
All in all a great family day out and for £6 entry fee for all three of us, it didn't break the bank either unlike many Bank Holiday family events can.
